Hewlett-Packard Company and UGA TEC Services have identified the network configuration issue encountered with certain HP LaserJet printers and have determined that it is related to the embedded JetDirect Network Interface Card (J7949E). The printers currently utilizing this embedded NIC include the HP LaserJet 2400, 4250, 4350, 9050 and 4345mfp series.
The specific issue is that the current firmware that resides on the embedded JetDirect NIC (J7949E) is unable to handle more than 43 AppleTalk Zones. When attaching a new HP LaserJet printer with the embedded JetDirect (J7949E) to the UGA network the LaserJet will lockup and no longer respond
We would like to inform you that we (HP) have a resolution in place to remedy this situation. HP has a new firmware for the JetDirect NIC (J7949E) available to UGA that removes this limitation.
Below are the steps to resolve this issue with the LaserJets.
Before attaching your new LaserJet to the UGA network, you'll need to disable the AppleTalk protocol on the LaserJet. Here are the steps to disable this protocol.
For the LaserJet 2400, 4250 and 4350 series;
- Press
(check mark). - Press
(Up arrow) or
(Down arrow) to scroll to CONFIGURE DEVICE menu and
press
(check
mark). - Press
(Up arrow) or
(Down arrow) to scroll to I/O,Press
(check mark). - Press
(Up arrow) or
(Down arrow) to scroll to EMBEDDED
JETDIRECT MENU, Press
(check mark). - Press
(Up arrow) or
(Down arrow) to scroll to APPLETALK,
press
(check mark). - Choose ENABLE,
Press
(check mark). - Press
(Up arrow) or
(Down arrow) to scroll to OFF, Press
(check mark). - Press
(back) five
times to return to the Ready state. - To confirm that the AppleTalk protocol has been disabled,
press
(check mark). - Press
(Up arrow) or
(Down arrow) to scroll to INFORMATION menu and
press
(check
mark). - Press
(Down arrow) to scroll to PRINT CONFIGURATION and
press
(check mark). - The printer will produce two pages of configuration information. On the second page is the Embedded JetDirect Configuration page. In the right column mid way down is the status of the AppleTalk protocol.
- If the Embedded JetDirect configuration Page confirms that the AppleTalk protocol is "Disabled," the LaserJet printer can be connected to the network.
Now the printer can be connected to the UGA network. Once connected to the UGA network, configure the printer to the appropriate network settings established by your Technical Network Liaison or Network Administrator.
Here are the steps to upgrade the firmware on the Embedded JetDirect NIC (J7949E).
- Obtain a copy of the new firmware for the Embedded JetDirect
NIC (J7949E), rev. J7949E_V2854_IR295.dld, from UGA's TEC Services. Right
click the following link and select save target as "filename" to
download the file. Be sure to save it as a .dld
file by selecting All files for Save
as type.
File link: JetDirect (J7949E) Firmware Upgrade
The file is about 3 Megabytes in size. Save it in a directory that is easy to remember on your hard drive. - Enter the IP address of your printer into a web browser as you would a URL.
Note: It is important to obtain this file from UGA's TEC Services because this revision of the firmware is not available from the HP.com support web site, yet.

You should see a web page that looks this:

Next click on the Networking tab:

Next click on the Other Settings link:

Next click on the Firmware Upgrade tab:

Next click on the Browse button next to the Firmware and a file chooser window will pop-up.

In this window enter the correct location and file name of the firmware file we'll use to upgrade the JetDirect's NIC. In the example above I had saved the firmware file to a removable storage card. After entering the correct location and file name click on the Open button.
After selecting the Open button, the file name and location is fed into the JetDirect card.
Next click on the Update Firmware button.

A series of pop-up windows should appear during the upgrade process. When the firmware process is completed up will get the following screen. Click on the OK button and the printer will reboot.

After the printer has rebooted and a Ready status is displayed on the control panel. You can enable the AppleTalk protocol. This can be done via the process above used to disable the AppleTalk protocol, or via the embedded web server.
To enable AppleTalk via the web server, open a web browser page and enter the IP address of the printer in the address bar.

Next click on the networking tab and then click the AppleTalk tab.

On the next page click on the box next to AppleTalk Enable, then click the Apply button.
The following screens will display a Configuration update status page. When the configuration is updated, click the OK button.
The upgrade is complete.
